Temple Overview: Located in the heart of Tirupati city, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Gangamma, the guardian of the town. The name "Thathayagunta" comes from a historical tank (Gunta) built by a devotee named Thathacharyulu, on the banks of which the temple stands. She is the most powerful local deity, and no major event in a Tirupati local's life is complete without her blessings.
History & Legend: Centuries ago, the region was ruled by a wicked local chieftain (Palegadu) who harassed women. To end his tyranny, Goddess Gangamma was born in Avilala village. When the chieftain tried to harm her, she revealed her fierce Vishwaroopam. He fled and hid in a secret location. To lure him out, Gangamma and the locals wore strange costumes (Veshams) and shouted curses. When he finally emerged on the seventh day, she slayed him, bringing peace to the land.

  • Peak Days: On Tuesdays and Fridays, the temple is extremely crowded and often stays open longer to accommodate the rush.
Detailed Darshanam Types & Bookings
  • Sarva Darshan (Free): General walk-in. Wait times are usually 15–30 mins, but can exceed 2 hours on Fridays.
  • Special Darshan (₹20 / ₹50): Nominal tickets available at the counter for faster access to the sanctum.
  • Note: During the annual Jatara, the system changes to handle the lakhs of devotees who arrive.
Sevas & Rituals
  • Abhishekam: Performed in the early morning hours.
  • Pongallu Offering: Women prepare traditional Pongal in earthen pots outside the temple and offer it to the Goddess to fulfill their vows.
  • Nippu Kunda: Devotees perform Pradakshina (circumambulation) while carrying a burning camphor pot on their heads.
  • Sashtanga Namaskaram: A common sight where devotees perform full-body prostrations on the road leading to the temple.
Festivals:Famous Ganga Jathara 2026
  • Ganga Jatara 2026: Tentatively May 12 – May 20, 2026. This is Tirupati's biggest folk festival.
  • The Veshams: Each day of the Jatara, devotees wear different costumes (Bhairagi, Banda, Thoti, Dora, Matangi).
  • The Saree Gift: As a brotherly gesture, the TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams) sends Sarey (sacred gifts including a Saree, bangles, and turmeric) from Lord Venkateswara to his sister Gangamma during this festival.
Annaprasdham & Prasadham
  • Ragi Ambali: A traditional cooling drink made of ragi and curd is often distributed to devotees, especially during the hot summer Jatara.
  • Pulihora & Vada: Available at the temple counters.
  • Local Faith: Many devotees bring "Arthi" (offerings) from their homes to present to the Goddess
Dress Code & Etiquette
  • Attire: Modest traditional wear is highly recommended.
  • Men: Dhoti, Kurta, or Formal Pants.
  • Women: Saree or Chudidar with Dupatta.
  • Etiquette: The temple has a very "high energy" and fierce vibe. It is customary to break a coconut at the entrance. Photography inside the inner sanctum is strictly prohibited.

  • Location: 3 km from the Tirupati Main Bus Stand and Railway Station.
  • Transport: Easily reachable via Tirupati360 Cab or auto-rickshaw. It is located near the busy "Vesalamma Temple" street.
  • Accessibility: The temple is on street level with no stairs, making it very accessible for seniors
